5 Common Winter Plumbing Problems

During the coldest times of the year, plumbing problems are more likely to happen in homes, especially if the pipes are old or run through the outside walls. But you can avoid many seasonal problems if you fix problems quickly and do regular maintenance. Read on to find out what the most common plumbing problems are so you know what to do to prevent them or fix them.

Frozen And Burst Pipes

Lower temperatures increase the likelihood of pipes freezing. Pipes can freeze if the temperature goes below freezing for an extended period of time. Plumbing on lower levels and attics is especially vulnerable. These areas are often less well-insulated than the rest of your home, making them more susceptible to freezing temperatures. Plus, you might not immediately notice a frozen pipe in these areas because they are out of sight.

If you ignore the problem of a frozen pipe, it will likely burst. Some areas of your home may lose water supply and experience floods if that happens, and the cost to fix this can be extremely high. Insulating your pipes well is a good solution.

Broken Water Heater

Water heaters have to work harder in the winter because they have to heat water that is already naturally cooler in order to maintain the temperature set on the gauge (the EPA recommends setting your water heater to 120°F to save energy usage and avoid bacteria growth).

The problem is that if it’s old and being overworked, your water heater might break down due to the excess work it’s being asked to do. The normal lifespan of a water heater is between eight and ten years. When a water heater fails to heat water to the desired temperature, it’s usually time to get a new one.

Water Line Leaks

Having little water leaks in the past and letting them worsen during the winter might lead to serious problems. Pipes are more likely to rupture in freezing weather, turning a slow drip into an instant flood. It’s important to check for leaks in your home’s pipes and faucets before winter arrives.

Clogged Drains

We celebrate with family and friends and eat a lot of delicious food over the holidays, and that’s great, but it’s best to refrain from washing large amounts of grease, coffee grounds, and other food scraps down the drain, as these items have a tendency to cling to the inside of pipes and build up over time. Put all leftovers and rubbish from cooking in the trash.

Issues With Your Sump Pump

Be sure your sump pump is working properly before the cold weather sets in. No matter how certain you are that everything is fine, you should nevertheless check in on it regularly during winter. If the sump pump is located in the basement, it is important to keep the temperature above freezing at all times to stop it from freezing. One way to make this easier is to remove the snow from around your home’s foundation; this will also help to prevent a flood in the basement.

Time To Curate Your Winter Wardrobe!

We’re heading headfirst into winter. Fall has been fun, filled with pumpkin spice lattes and Halloween festivities, but we’re beginning to experience the first signs of winter and the Christmas season. The wind is begin to blow harder. The temperature is dropping. We’re beginning to experience more rain, which will soon become sleet and snow. The mornings are getting frosty. This means meany things. It means many of us are going to begin spending more time indoors and that we’re going to start getting ready for the festive season ahead. One area of your life you’re going to need to turn your focus to – in order to stay warm and comfortable – is your clothing. Now is the best time to start building your winter wardrobe. Here are some suggestions to fuel you along the way!

Loungewear

First things first, let’s consider loungewear. As we briefly mentioned above, you’re probably going to spend more time indoors now that the winter is coming around, so it’s good to have plenty of comfortable wear to settle down in for the months ahead. Loungewear has really taken off as a category of clothing since the pandemic, as people began to search for comfortable clothes that were still more presentable than pyjamas. Browse a range of tracksuits, leggings and hoodie combos and more. You may also want to grab some fluffy socks and cosy slippers for your feet. These are particularly beneficial if you have a lot of wooden or tiled flooring in your home, which can be cold in the mornings.

Hats, Gloves and Scarves

Hats, gloves and scarves are going to become essential for times when you venture out and about. These protect some of the areas of your body where heat is most likely to escape and where the wind and cold weather is most likely to hit. You lose a lot of heat from your head and your hands, which is why hats and scarves are so important. Scarves protect your neck from cold and harsh winds. There are countless styles out there, so start your search at https://paisleygraceboutique.com/ to find something that ticks all of your boxes.

Coats

Winter coats tend to be a more costly investment, but they are essential and can really help to keep your warm when the temperatures drop. It’s good to choose a couple, ensuring that they are quality to last the test of time. One coat made from heavy, cosy fabrics tends to be a good idea. Another that is waterproof, for use in rain and storms, is recommended too. Another option that many people seem to enjoy at the moment is a puffer coat, which insulates but is lightweight and often waterproof.

Boots

You lose a lot of heat through your feet, so you want to keep this in with boots. Boots should also be waterproof to ensure that your feet stay nice and dry in the rain or when walking through puddles. Also look for options with good grip, which helps in the frost and snow.

These winter essentials will serve you well in the upcoming months, so make sure to find them sooner rather than later to get maximum use out of them!

Don’t Move the Plumbing:

If you plan a kitchen or bathroom remodel, resist the temptation to move the plumbing. This is one of the most expensive changes you can make, so leaving the sink, toilet, and shower, where they are, is best.

Do Your Demo:

Start with the demo if you’re planning on doing some of the work yourself. This can be a dirty and time-consuming task, but it’s also one of the most affordable ways to save money on your remodel.

Limit Customizations:

Customizations can quickly add up, so it’s important to limit them when possible. Stick with standard materials and finishes whenever possible. If you must have something custom-made, be sure to shop around for the best price.

Stick to In-Stock Items:

In-stock items are usually much cheaper than custom orders. Therefore, stick to things already in stock at your local home improvement store whenever possible. This can help you save a significant amount of money.

Use Recycled Materials:

Recycled materials are a great way to save money on your home remodel. Look for salvage yards that sell reclaimed wood, tile, and other materials in your area.

Shop at Reuse Centers:

Reuse centers are a great place to find inexpensive building materials. These centers sell donated or gently used items at a fraction of the cost of new materials.

Buy Second Hand Fixtures:

Secondhand fixtures can be a great way to save money on your home remodel. Be sure to check online classifieds and thrift stores for gently used items.

Splurge on One Statement Piece:

If you’re on a tight budget, choosing your splurges is essential. One way to do this is to focus on one statement piece. This could be an expensive piece of furniture or a custom-made item. In addition, you can save money elsewhere in your remodel by splurging on one item.

DIY Whenever Possible:

Whenever possible, try to do the work yourself. This can help you save a significant amount of money on labor costs. If you need help with how to do something, plenty of resources are available online and at your local library.

Repurpose Old Materials:

If you’re remodeling an older home, be sure to salvage any usable materials. These can be reused in your new design or sold to help offset the cost of your remodel.

Wait for Sales:

One of the best ways to save money on your home remodel is to wait for sales. Home improvement stores typically have sales several times a year. By waiting for a sale, you can often get the materials you need at a fraction of the cost.

Install Energy-Efficient Features:

Installing energy-efficient features is a great way to save money on utility bills. Additionally, many utility companies offer rebates for energy-efficient upgrades.

Add Insulation:

Adding attic insulation to your home is an excellent way to reduce energy costs. This relatively easy and inexpensive project can make a big difference in your energy bills.

Replace Old Windows:

Old, drafty windows can be a significant source of heat loss in your home. Replacing them with new, energy-efficient windows can help you save money on your energy bills; after you replace your old windows, why not add unique curtain rods to make the interior even more beautiful? If you do decide to choose curtain rods but do not know How to Choose Curtain Rods, there are a few factors to consider:

  • The type of window you have.
  • The weight of the curtains.
  • The style of your décor.

Finally, consider the style of your home when selecting curtain rods. If your home has a traditional aesthetic, choose rods with classic details like finials or scrolls. If your home has a more modern aesthetic, opt for simple rods in sleek finishes like chrome or brushed nickel.

Weatherstrip Doors and Windows:

Weatherstripping doors and windows is an easy and affordable way to improve your home’s energy efficiency. This simple project can make a big difference in your energy bills.

Use LED Lights:

LED lights are more expensive than traditional incandescent bulbs, but they last much longer and use less energy. So over time, LED lights can help you save money on energy bills.

Install a Programmable Thermostat:

A programmable thermostat can help you save money on your energy bills by allowing you to remotely control the temperature of your home. This is an excellent feature for people away from home during the day or on vacation.

Seal Your Home:

Sealing your home is an excellent way to improve its energy efficiency. This simple project can help you save money on your energy bills by preventing heat loss.

Get Multiple Bids:

When hiring contractors, it’s essential to get multiple bids. This will help ensure you get the best possible work price. Additionally, be sure to get everything in writing before work begins. This will protect you in case there are any problems with the project.

Finally, Some Benefits To Remodeling Your Home:

Remodeling your home can have several benefits, both practical and aesthetic. Here are a few of the main benefits:
